AMAA runs Boston!

Dave Watt

Hydration in a marathon. That certainly was topic #1 for all runners, not just the AMAA runners. Two days prior to the Boston Marathon[R], AMAA symposium attendees heard prominent panelists present findings on triggers for hyponatremia during events such as marathons. When marathon Monday arrived, seasonally warm (“hot” say the runners) weather prevailed and staying hydrated became a significant issue. It was reported that incidents of near-fatal hyponatremia did occur, with some cases not presenting until post-race (a future AMAA Journal will address these findings).

The Boston Athletic Association reported that this year’s marathon participants ran in the hottest temperatures since 1987. That particularly warm day is still a recent memory for me as that was one of my official trips to run the Boston Marathon[R]. I learned first-hand that sunscreen on your neck and backside are essential for “survival” on a warm, sunny marathon day. In 2004, despite excessively high temperatures, AMAA members still managed to reach the finish line, although many reported that they had “disappointing finish times.” We’re just glad they survived the heat!

We applaud everyone who officially–and unofficially–completed the 108th Boston Marathon[R]. Special congratulations to AMAA Board member Mark Courtney who joined the prestigious “25 consecutive Boston Marathon Club.” Mark was also our first finisher (again) in 2004.

We hope to see you in April 2005 on a much cooler day!

(The following list includes official chip times of members who ran with

AMAA numbers, as well as people who attended the symposium and ran with

their own qualifying numbers. We apologize in advance for anyone who has

been omitted from the list. Times were taken from the B.A.A. Web site.)
