First crush report – News this Month: March 2002 – Brief Article

The first estimate for the winegrape crush in California in 2001 was 3 million tons for a total crush of 3.37 million tons. The total U.S. crush estimate was for 3.60 million tons. The estimates are from the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the USDA–National Agricultural Statistics Services.

Last year’s crush was 9% down from the record crush in 2000. Total farm gate value of the wine tonnage was nearly $1.8 billion, and the average price per ton statewide was $591, up from $571 the previous year.

At 1.7 million tons, the red wine crush was down 1%, while the white wine crush was 1.3 million tons, down 8%.

Chardonnay, at 586,436 tons, was most-crushed followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Colombard, Zinfandel and Merlot. The average price for Chardonnay was $837; Cabernet Sauvignon, $1,062; Colombard, $129; Zinfandel, $519; and Merlot, $993.

Among other red cultivars, Barbera fetched $220; Shiraz/Syrah, $714; Pinot noir, $1,849; and Cabernet franc, $1,481.

In the white category, Chenin blanc averaged $174; Sauvignon blanc, $858; Pinot gris, $925; Viognier, $958; and Gewurztraminer, $987.

A total of 1,302,768 tons of white wine types were crushed at an average price of $483 per ton, while a total of 1,716,911 tons of red winegrapes were crushed at an average $670 per ton.

Wine Institute noted that winegrapes, excluding table and raisin types, are the state’s third largest agricultural crop.
