Building healthy bones – introduction of the Familia C.M.D. cereal from American Marketing Team – Brief Article
Lynn Dornblaser
Calcium enrichment has moved from the dairy case to the breakfast or cereal aisle. A new cereal product, imported by American Marketing Team, Bloomfield, N.J., is from the familiar Familia label. Familia is a brand name known for its Swiss Muesli cereal.
Familia C.M.D. cereal is fortified with calcium, magnesium and vitamin D. The company says the cereal provides one-third of the recommended daily intake of calcium when served with milk. The magnesium and vitamin D are added because they “work together with calcium to build and maintain strong bones.”
Although the package shows a drawing of a woman on the front, the company indicates that not only women are at risk for osteoporosis. This is the first calcium-enriched product we’ve seen that makes that distinction. The back package copy says that “high risk groups include white and Asian teens and young adult women, middle aged women and elderly men and women.”
