Taylor Box Co. and All Packaging Co. won the rigid box and folding carton best of show awards at the National Paperbox Association’s (NPA) 53rd Annual Packaging Competition. The winners were announced at the association’s 85th Annual Meeting, June 22-25 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Twenty-two rigid box and folding carton industry firms from around the world shared in 146 awards in the international competition. The NPA gave two best of show awards, bestowed on the top scorer of all rigid box entries and of all the folding carton entries.

Best of Show

Taylor Box Co., Warren, R.I., won the rigid box best of show for its “Private Client Bank Division Promotional Box.” The box, packaging a hardcover book, letter and reply card, was manufactured for Dickson’s Inc.

The judges said the innovations of the tray in slipcase box are apparent at first glance. The unique horizontal slipcase with tray style of box makes it a high-end presentation piece. Using a silver satin ribbon pull for both sliding the tray out of the slipcase and pulling out the material in the tray is very versatile.

“This setup box demands attention, the colors are sophisticated and current, evocative of the personality of the advertising and promotional materials contained within. Materials include a 0.080 vat board, 0.018 CCNB, 80# litho with two-color process print and film lamination. The box is extremely strong and efficient while presenting a new and refreshing look,” the judges say.

The folding carton best of show was presented to All Packaging Co., Aurora, Colo., for “Glominerals” packaged cosmetics manufactured for Caleel-Hayden, LLC.

The judges said the innovative family of packages was designed for a new high-end cosmetic line sold to a select professional market. The packaging needed to project a professional, prestigious image but could not be at the high cost of similar product lines. The customer and designer chose to achieve the prestigious look using two contrasting coatings to duplicate the “glo” logo on the entire background of each carton. A unique two-step coating process, all done in one pass during printing, created this dramatic effect.

“A chemical reaction occurred between the varnish and the UV coatings, creating the desired effect. Another added bonus of this revolutionary procedure is that the entire carton received the durable protection of the UV coating, instead of only within the glossy areas. A slight variation on a standard STE carton was used and the back panel was extended by a small degree, which gives the carton a better flat stance to sit upright on a shelf. The response from the customer and consumers has been overwhelming and sales have far exceeded projections after only a few weeks. The response is a combination of the superior product formulations coupled with the sophisticated appeal of the packaging,” the judges say.

There were 146 winners selected from 39 classes and five judge’s categories. The judging panel designated a total of 56 gold awards and 90 excellence awards. Entries came from the United States, Canada and Europe.PBP

“The Student Design Competition is an excellent opportunity to enlighten packaging students of the broad range of industries that involve packaging and to give them a feel for what the up and coming trends are in these industries,” says Packaging Competition Chairman Chet Baron of the Paul T. Freund Corp.

The National Student Design Competition recognizes and encourages college students in the packaging design field. All participants gain invaluable exposure to the paperboard packaging industry. The competition also inspires students to explore and broaden their view of packaging in today’s marketplace.

NPA Awards Judges’ Citations

The National Paperbox Association (NPA) reports three Judge’s Citation Awards in the 53rd Annual Packaging Competition of the rigid box and folding carton industries. Judge Jim Trimm selected the Glominerals Cartons manufactured by All Packaging Co., Aurora, Colo., for Caleel-Hayden LLC. “The sophisticated appeal of this package is a major part of the product’s acceptance and it’s truly a winning package showcasing a winning product,” Trimm says.

Judge Barbara Wentz selected the Turi Sampler Box manufactured by Wright Brothers Paper Box Co., Hialeah, Fla., for Bacardi-Martini USA. Wentz says, “This setup box demands attention, the colors are sophisticated and current, evocative of the personality of an upscale vodka whose target audience is similarly sophisticated and accomplished.”

Judge David Luttenberger selected the Tazo Travel Tin Carton manufactured by Utah Paper Box Co., Salt Lake City, for Starbucks. “This package combines consumer trends, lifestyle choices, marketability, and high-tech manufacturing methods,” he says.
