M2 BEST BOOKS-(C)2000-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

The stories of some of the women who fell in love with Australian soldiers and sailed across the seas to join them are told in a new book.

Author Carol Fallows used taped interviews, letters, memoirs, newspapers and historical accounts to research the stories featured in ‘Love & War: Stories of War Brides from the Great War to Vietnam’.

The book notes that one group of brides was physically attacked on arrival in Melbourne by local girls angry that Australian men – who were in short supply – had chosen foreign wives, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

‘Love & War’ is published by Bantam Books and costs AUD29.95.
