SCHOTT builds microarray business

Denver, CO 10/15/03 and Yonkers, NY 10/23/03–SCHOTT Nexterion AG, a subsidiary of SCHOTT Group, has announced three agreements that will expand its microarray slide business. The company announced that in August it took over the Microarrays Business Division of Quantifoil Micro Tools GmbH, including its complete product line and development team. SCHOTT Nexterion will now distribute the products with no changes to product specifications planned. It signed a letter of intent for an exclusive technology transfer license to Accelr8’s OptiChem surface chemistries. Under the agreement, SCHOTT Nexterion gains the right to manufacture OptArray microarray slides and exclusive global marketing rights to them. SCHOTT Nexterion will also purchase OptArray permeable hydrogel microarray slides for resale under the Nexterion name as part of a separate supply agreement. Thus Nexterion will become SCHOTT Nexterion’s sole supplier and Accelr8 will provide training and support. SCHOTT Nexterion expects to ultimately become the exclusive outsource manufacturer for OptArray products in the summer of 2004, with Accelr8 using only SCHOTT’s borosilicate glass for its slide).

Schott has quietly and steadily begun to build a presence in the microarray marketplace. It has successfully moved beyond that of a supplier of glass products, for which SCHOTT is well known, to being a participant with integration capabilities. At the same time, SCHOTT has avoided making major investments at high valuations during a time when the market is in significant flux.
