Britain’s top supermarket, Tesco Plc, said it will triple the number of its stores offering home Internet shopping, adding 7,000 jobs. The number of shops offering the Tesco Direct service will be increased over the next 12 months to 300, from 100 at present. Tesco already claims to be the largest online grocer in the world, with 250,000 registered customers and annual sales of $206.77 million. Tesco also plans to widen the service into other non-food areas such as books, clothing, furnisbings and banking. The UK’s third biggest supermarket Asda (J Sainsbury is number two), now owned by Wal Mart, also is planning to beef up its online service and expand the number of distribution centers to 15 from 12 in the next three to five years and adding 1,200 jobs. Meanwhile, J Sainsbury also is increasing its Internet presence and recently replaced its CEO with Prudential head Peter Davis, a big name in Internet business, who has promised to make e-commerce a top priority for the grocer.
