Kellogg Co., Battle Creek Mich., elected Carlos Gutierrez to a three-year term to its board and named him chief executive officer. Gutierrez, who began working for Kellogg in Mexico in 1975, replaces Arnold Langbo, whose exit was precipitated by a year of disappointing earnings and stock performance. Langbo will remain as chairman until next year. Also elected to similar terms were: Claudio Gonzalez, William Richardson and John Zabriskie. In other news, Donald Rumsfeld retired from Kellogg’s board after 14 years.
Triarc Companies, Inc. announced the formation of the Triarc Restaurant Group’s (TRG) office of the CEO, following the resignation of Roland Smith, TRG’s president and CEO. Smith has worked with some of the most well known and respected global brands including Procter & Gamble, Pepsi, Schering-Plough and KFC International. Smith joined TRG in 1994 as vice president; international marketing. Under Smith’s leadership since 1997, the restaurant group nearly tripled its operating profit from 1996 to year-end 1998. Smith is now the new president and chief executive officer for AMF Bowling, Inc., Richmond, Va., a leading owner and operator of bowling centers. Five TRG senior executives will serve as the TRG office of the CEO until Smith’s successor is named. Members of the office of the CEO include: Curtis Gimson, senior vice president and general counsel; Michael Howe, senior vice president, operations; Kenneth Johnston, senior vice president; business development; Kenneth Thomas, senior vice president and chief f inancial officer; and John Vanderslice, senior vice president; new concepts.
Quaker Oats Co., Chicago, promoted Mark Shapiro to the newly created position of senior vice president, corporate strategy and development. Shapiro will continue as president of the Golden Grain business. He joined Quaker in 1983 as brand manager, cereals. Also announced, Greg Shearson will assume the role of vice president, new ventures, effective immediately. He will report to Shapiro.
Einstein/Noah Bagel Corp., Golden, Colo., appointed Paula Manley as chief financial officer replacing W. Eric Carlborg who resigned. Manley has been a vice president since February 1998. Prior to that, Manley was chief financial officer of one of the company’s former area developers. In addition, Manley has served as controller of the franchise division of Burger King Corp.
Coca-Cola Enterprises, Atlanta, announced its board approved several management changes. Effective immediately, John Alm and Norman Findley have been named principal operating officers, Lowry Kline has been elected chief administrative officer, and Patrick Mannelly has been named chief financial officer. In addition, John Parker, Jr. was elected corporate vice president. Effective July 1, Parker will also assume the role of general counsel.
Australian beer and wine firm Foster’s Brewing Group Ltd. reported the resignation of Fred Hilmer from its board, and the appointment of Graeme McGregor as a new director. McGregor, who served on the Foster’s board between 1992 and 1996, is executive director of finance with Australia’s Broken Hill Proprietary Co., a steel, energy and mining concern.
Bruce Wills joined Rosemount Estate Winery of Australia, Sonoma, Calif., as its Mid-Atlantic sales and marketing director. Previously, Wills was the sales manger for William J. Deutsch & Sons and Robert Mondavi Winery.
Triarc Beverage Group, White Plains, N.Y., made several personnel changes. Neal Larkin was promoted to group director, promotions for both Snapple and Mistic beverages; Page Bowler is now Mistic promotions manager; and, Cathy Stoia, is now Snapple associate promotions manager.
The National Food Processors Association presented Mike Doyle, department head, food science and technology, University of Georgia, Athens, and director of the university’s Center for Food Safety and Quality Enhancement, with the association’s 1999 Food Safety Award. The award is presented in honor of outstanding contributions to the field of food safety. Doyle was one of the first food microbiologists to study E. coli 0157:H7 in 1982.
