Swiss Coop reports organic boom – Food Retailing – organic products are selling well – Brief Article – Statistical Data Included
Swiss retail giant Coop has both reported strong performance of their organic products in their annual results. Coop described its sales as “remarkable” pointing to the success of the organic labels Naturaplan, Naturaline, Oecoplan and Cooperacion/Max Havelaar.
Together, the four brands exceeded a SFr1bn in turnover (up 35%), “two years in advance of forecasts,” the company emphasised.
The success of the sector brought some criticism in the Swiss press regarding traceability and labelling of organic products.
The main criticisms appear to be that, as in the UK, a large number of organic products and ingredients are imported into Switzerland, thus undermining the environmental benefits of the production system, and the concern that imported organic products may not be produced to the same high standards as domestic ones.
Coop is Switzerland’s biggest organic retailer, with a 46% market share, followed by Migros with 23%. Health food stores account for 19%.
A total of 5.3% of all Coop food sales are organic.
