Conad expands – Brief Article

Conad Adriatico, a subsidiary of the big Italian supermarket group Conad, has purchased 57 supermarkets in central and northern Italy for an undisclosed sum. The 57 supermarkets grossed Lit160bn (82.6m [European Dollar]) last year. With the acquisition, Conad Adriatico’s annual sales this year are expected to top the Lit1 000bn mark from its 300 or so outlets. Additional purchases may be in the offing, the company says. The latest purchase in the Italian distribution market comes amid reports that the French group Leclerc is eyeing the Italian market either for a deal with major distributors or to set up a network of its own, with observers saying the former option appears to be the more likely.
