Caffe Nero ranked UK’s favourite – Company News – Brief Article – Statistical Data Included

Caffe Nero, the UK’s largest independent coffee bar operator with 108 units, has been ranked number one by consumers according to a new report on the market.

The study, released by Allegra Strategies ranked Caffe Nero as the consumers’ preferred coffee bar brand in the UK. As well as being the overall winner, Caffe Nero also scored highest with consumers in the four all-important categories of coffee quality, service, atmosphere and food quality. This is the second time in a row that Caffe Nero has been ranked the top coffee bar brand in Allegra’s annual report.

The study is based on interviews with over 2 000 consumers and 100 industry experts.

Allegra’s research forecasts strong future growth in the UK coffee bar market. The current total of 7 057 coffee bars in the UK is set to increase by a compound annual rate of 5.9% to 2004. But growth of branded outlets is expected to be much greater, at 14% a year over this period, with most of that growth coming from outside the London area. The report concludes that brands will continue to win out over independents and that four brands (Starbucks, Caffe Nero, Costa and Coffee Republic) control more than 60% of the branded market.

Allegra estimates that in 2002 total turnover for the UK branded coffee bar market will be 444m [pounds sterling] (712.8m [euro]). Total sales of espresso-based drinks (including cappuccinos and lattes) are now estimated at 4.4 million cups a week compared with 3.2 million cups per week in the previous year.

Commenting on the latest flattering study, Gerry Ford, chairman and chief executive of Caffe Nero said, “This latest Allegra report is a resounding endorsement of the Caffe Nero brand. It demonstrates that our strategy of focusing on coffee quality, service and atmosphere is making a real difference to consumers.
