Stencil Printer Division for $14.8M
franklin, mass. — Speedline Technologies and its MPM Corp. subsidiary have acquired the business and selective assets of the SMTech Ltd. stencil printer division of Quad Systems Corp., Willow Grove, Pa., for $14.8 million.
“This agreement allows Quad to continue strengthening its core SMT and selected advanced packaging technology (APT) assembly businesses while at the same time enhancing the printer offerings we provide to current Quad customers and the industry as a whole,” said Ted Shoneck, president of Quad.
Under terms of the agreement, Speedline/MPM will supply Quad Systems with the SMTech product line on an OEM basis. The arrangement will enable Quad to continue to offer complete assembly line packages to current and future customers. In addition, Speedline/MPM will immediately begin to support SMTech’s existing customers within their global sales, engineering and customer support services.
The acquisition “fits into Speedline’s strategy to be the pre-eminent technology integrator for the electronics assembly and semiconductor packaging industries,” claimed Rick Berger, president of Speedline Technologies.
Bob Balog, general manager of Speedline/MPM, added “By joining SMTech and Speedline/MPM’s product lines, the electronics assembly market gets the full range of stencil printer products, from benchtop semi-automatic units to the most advanced automatic printers in the world. We look forward to expanding our product line by adding SMTech’s cost-effective and flexible printers, most notably the Sigmaprint 500.”
The SMTech acquisition marks the second time this year that Speedline has acquired a company to expand its capabilities. In September, Speedline acquired ACCEL, a U.S.-based manufacturer of high performance cleaning systems for the electronics assembly and semiconductor packaging industries.
Quad Systems is a leading manufacturer of flexible, high-performance surface mount technology and advanced packaging technology assembly systems. Quad provides support, process expertise and a complete range of equipment, including assemblers, stencil printers and convection reflow ovens.
Based in Dorchester, England, SMTech manufactures semi-automatic and automatic stencil printing equipment for the surface mount technology segment of the electronics industry. The company has installed more than 1,250 stencil printers since 1991.
Headquartered in Franklin, Mass., Speedline Technologies forms the Assembly Equipment Sector of Cookson Electronics, a division of Cookson Plc., a global supplier of electronic materials, ceramics, engineered products and plastics based in the United Kingdom.
“Quad and Speedline/MPM have combined their technology and manufacturing resources to deliver market leading stencil printing solutions,” said Craig Ramsey, vice president of marketing for Quad. “Quad’s advanced products and systems integration expertise are strengthened by MPM’s stencil printing market knowledge and experience.
