CARB could mandate NOx ‘defeat device’ reprogramming on 1993-1998 trucks, starting next year – Around the World of Diesel – Brief Article
Because only 4-10% of California trucks have gotten electronic control module (ECM) reprogramming to cut nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from so-called “defeat devices” on 1993-98 trucks, California Air Resources Board (CARB) could force reprogramming, between April 30-Dec. 31, 2004. Out-of-state trucks would have their first failure-to-reprogram violation waived, but not the second, under a proposed scheme going to CARB board in October. CARB claims “average” fuel-economy penalties from ECM reprogramming would be “below one percent.”
