Michael W. Unger has begun his one-year term as president of the American Council of Engineering Cos. of Oregon, a statewide trade group of consulting engineers. He replaces outgoing president Don Kliewer of URS Corp.

An electrical engineer by trade, Unger is the founder and president of Power System Engineers Inc. of Tigard. PSE is a small consulting firm specializing in design and analysis for public and private utility companies. Prior to founding PSE in 1994, Unger spent 24 years working for Engineering and Design Associates, also in Tigard.

Born and raised on a farm south of Hillsboro, Unger earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical science from University of Portland, and was granted his master’s degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University.

He was first elected to ACEC Oregon’s board of directors in 1993, and has previously served in a variety of roles in the organization, including vice president and secretary/treasurer. Unger and his wife Cheri, who also works for PSE, live in Portland and have three children.

“My goals are to continue our organization’s strong advocacy work for member firms and engineers as a whole, and to reinforce our recent achievements including the implementation of Qualified Based Selection here in Oregon,” said Unger in a telephone interview.

QBS laws, which set new requirements for public contracting procedures, were adopted for state projects in 1997 and city/county projects in 2001.

“Michael is an astute manager who’s used to working with large and diverse groups of people and keeping them moving in the same direction,” said George Gross, ACEC Oregon’s president-elect for 2003- 04. “He pays great attention to detail and is a highly organized person, which I think are qualities that make him very attractive as the president of our group.”

Formerly known as Consulting Engineers Council of Oregon, the group changed its name to ACEC Oregon at the end of 2001.
