WKTU-FM `The Beat of New York’ Names Frankie Blue Vice President, Operations and Programming
NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 3, 1999–
WKTU-FM `The Beat of New York’ (103.5), a Chancellor Media Corporation (Nasdaq: AMFM) station, named 16-year programming veteran Frankie Blue as Vice President of Operations and Programming, it was announced today by Steve Rivers, Chancellor’s Chief Programming Officer, and Scott Elberg, Vice President and General Manager of the station. The appointment is effective immediately.
A New York native, Mr. Blue has been a fixture in the New York radio broadcasting community for over a decade. He is best known for helping engineer the worst-to-first turnaround of WKTU, which after switching to a mass-appeal rhythmic format in 1996 went on to become the No. 1 station in the country with a cume of over 2 million listeners. Today WKTU continues to be one of the most listened-to radio stations in the country. Prior to joining Chancellor in 1996, he was Director of Programming at The Box – Video Jukebox Network in Miami, a national cable music network. From 1983 to 1994, Mr. Blue was Assistant Program Director and Music Director of WHTZ-FM `Z100′ in New York. He is a five-time recipient of Billboard’s Music Director of the Year award and a three-time recipient of the magazine’s Program Director of the Year award.
Steve Rivers commented, “Music and programming are the foundation of Chancellor Media’s success, and Frankie’s leadership at WKTU over the past three years has set the standard for all of our programmers to follow. His experience is a tremendous asset, both to the station and to Chancellor Media, and we hope to draw on it as we seek to replicate WKTU’s success in other markets and formats.”
Scott Elberg added, “Since WKTU was relaunched in 1996, Frankie has been a driving force behind the station’s phenomenal rise to the top ranks of New York radio. His creative energy and programming skills continue to keep WKTU’s sound fresh and exciting. By elevating Frankie to Vice President, Operations and Programming Manager, we look for his contagious energy to spread throughout the entire station and lift WKTU to new heights in the years ahead.”
In addition to WKTU, Chancellor owns six other radio stations in New York: WLTW-FM `Lite FM’; WHTZ-FM `Z-100′; WTJM-FM `Jammin’ 105′, WALK-FM/AM and WAXQ-FM `New York’s Only Classic Rock Station.’
