StoreAge SVM Boosts Electronic Archiving Services; ImageStore Systems Uses SVM to Centralize Storage Management and Improves Data Backup Speed by 90%

HAIFA, Israel–(BUSINESS WIRE)–March 24, 2004
StoreAge Networking Technologies, an innovator in enterprise SAN storage management, today announced the deployment of its SVM(TM) (Storage Virtualization Manager) at ImageStore Systems, a leading provider of electronic archiving services including imaging, microfilm, microfiche, COM and OCR. The deployment at ImageStore was effected in cooperation with Computer Direct Systems, StoreAge’s partner in Israel.
Central Storage Management
ImageStore’s production environment consists of about 100 users, all sharing the same data. It needed a complete solution that could combine file-sharing capabilities with the ability to ensure business continuity. After examining various solutions, ImageStore selected StoreAge SVM to manage its SAN, which comprises of IBM FAStT600 central disk systems, IBM’s Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM 5.2), IBM SAN-to-NAS Gateway 300G and the new LTO2 3582 Library. By combining the SAN environment with the NAS gateway for file sharing via IP connection, ImageStore enjoys all the benefits of a SAN centrally managed by SVM with the low-cost achieved by removing the need for using expensive HBA cards.
In order to improve backup, ImageStore uses multiView, StoreAge’s snapshot copy application, in conjunction with IBM’s TSM. multiView creates instantly available, low capacity snapshots of SAN data. These snapshots are mounted on the TSM backup server and then sent to tape. This enables LAN-free, server-less backup, leaving production servers uninvolved in the data movement process. multiView has significantly reduced ImageStore’s backup time – from 5 days to only 12 hours. Moreover, since each low-capacity snapshot is a fraction of the original volume size, multiple snapshots can be created each day and retained online without consuming excessive amounts of disk capacity. This improves the level of data protection, and allows data to be rapidly restored from disk rather than from tape, with the granularity of a single file.
“The joint StoreAge/IBM solution answers all our requirements in terms of file sharing capabilities, central storage management and enhanced backup.” Said Igor Kozlov, IT manager at ImageStore. “This extremely reliable and cost effective solution gives us full flexibility for future growth. Computer Direct played a major role in the deployment process, and continues to support us as the environment scales up.”
Dani Naor, vice president of business development at StoreAge, noted: “We are happy to cooperate with Computer Direct in delivering ImageStore a robust solution. Using SVM in conjunction with our low capacity snapshot application, combined with IBM’s TSM, allows customers to perform backup much faster and easier, ensuring business continuity.”
“The ability to integrate and deploy all these technologies in a single production environment is a great asset.” Said Yariv Haguel, storage technical manager at Computer Direct. “Our customers now benefit from a comprehensive solution that allows them to share data, centrally manage their storage and improve their backup capabilities, all at a very affordable cost.”
SVM (Storage Virtualization Manager) is a SAN appliance that provides virtual volume management in highly heterogeneous environments, supporting multiple connectivity schemes, server platforms and storage sub-systems. SVM dramatically reduces the cost of SAN storage and SAN storage management by centralizing the provisioning, performance optimization and protection of storage across heterogeneous hosts and storage devices. SVM serves as an ideal platform for StoreAge’s SAN-aware storage applications: multiView(TM) (snapshot copy application), multiCopy(TM) (copy application) and multiMirror(TM) (mirroring application), enabling Disaster Recovery capabilities and ensuring business continuity.
