– Spirent to produce test solution for functional and protocol

testing of CDMA2000 1xEV technology –

Spirent Communications(TM), a wholly-owned business group of Spirent plc (NYSE: SPM) and QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced plans for Spirent to produce a CDMA2000 1x Evolution (1xEV) test solution.

Spirent will develop and deploy the wireless industry’s first commercially available 1xEV Network Emulator. Spirent’s test solution will enable both functional and protocol testing of CDMA2000 1xEV Access Terminals (ATs).

Spirent has expanded its CDMA technology license to include the 1xEV CSM5500(TM) Cell Site Modem (CSM(TM)) infrastructure chipset. Spirent will leverage this technology, to provide early availability of a test solution that can help accelerate the worldwide deployment of 1xEV. Spirent’s Network Emulator is expected to be available for use in the fourth calendar quarter of 2001.

Spirent’s new platform represents an evolution of the existing AirAccess C2K CDMA Network Emulation product line. AirAccess C2K was rapidly accepted as the industry standard for CDMA2000 1X testing and is currently in use with leading CDMA service providers and CDMA handset manufacturers worldwide.

“QUALCOMM is pleased that Spirent is developing advanced CDMA2000 1xEV test solutions to enable the rapid deployment of wireless data services worldwide,” said Barbara Noerenberg, vice president of program management for QUALCOMM. “We look forward to working with Spirent as they continue to provide for the rapidly growing CDMA market.”

Charles Simmons, president of Spirent Communications’ TAS Division added, “By adding CDMA2000 1xEV capabilities into our AirAccess C2K test platform, Spirent is playing a leading role in enabling the successful deployment of next-generation wireless data services. This new test solution, along with the adoption of Spirent’s C2K-ATS Automatic Test System by QUALCOMM’s licensees, reflects our commitment to ensure that next-generation CDMA technology arrives in a timely manner.”
