SmartDisk Unveils New Smarty Smart Card Reader/Writer
NAPLES, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 4, 1999–
User-Friendly Adapter Offers Compatibility with
More Smart Card Standards, Faster
Data Transfer Speed and Extended Coverage
SmartDisk Corporation, a company focused on providing simple, innovative solutions that advance and enhance the use of miniature media and smart cards, today announced the introduction of a new version of its Smarty(R) smart card reader/writer.
Smarty is the only device to use the familiar 3.5-inch floppy disk drive to read and write data to and from smart cards. The new version offers several enhancements including compatibility with Microsoft’s PC/SC smart card standard, faster data transfer speeds and extended battery life with an advanced power saving mode. The Smarty reader/writer is a key “enabler” of a wide range of smart card applications such as access control to computers and networks, data encryption, digital identification and secure electronic commerce.
“Smarty was initially conceived as a universal tool, capable of converting the huge installed base of 3.5-inch floppy drives into smart card reader/writers,” said Michael S. Battaglia, President and CEO. “It has also become an enabling technology that has promoted the use of smart cards for e-commerce, electronic banking and other ‘new-frontier’ applications.”
“We joined forces with SmartDisk two years ago because of the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation,” said Neissan Monadjem, Managing Director at Prosisa Informatica Ltd, a Smarty distributor and provider of Internet security solutions to Visa International and other financial institutions. “The new version of Smarty features enhancements that will enable us to further broaden the portfolio of smart card services we can offer our customers.”
Robust features add flexibility
Smarty’s enhanced interoperability makes it a single device that can interface with both ISO7816 compatible smart cards and memory cards. The new Smarty can also work with well-known standards such as Microsoft’s PC/SC and the OpenCard Framework standard.
In addition, to help facilitate transactions and the exchange of information between smart cards and Smarty, the new Smarty features improved data transfer rates that will meet both current and future smart card communication standards.
For user convenience, the new version of Smarty operates on two Lithium CR2025 batteries which are available at most convenience stores worldwide. It also features an advanced power savings mode that allows Smarty to utilize battery power only when communication to the smart card is required. As another enhancement, Smarty features a sleep mode for periods of inactivity.
Together with the new Smarty, SmartDisk is releasing an updated version of its Software Developer’s Kit (SDK), which permits the development of applications that enable the reader/writer to communicate with and access the full functionality of any smart card. The Smarty SDK includes software on CD-ROM and documentation for applications developed in C, Visual Basic, and C++ languages, for Windows 95 or Windows NT platforms. Drivers are also included for development in the PC/SC environment.
