PCSI announces new CDPD mobile data base station compact MDBS expands wireless data coverage options

SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Aug. 13, 1996–PCSI, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cirrus Logic Inc. (NASDAQ:CRUS), Tuesday announced a new mobile data base station for Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) networks.

The Cellerity Series Compact Mobile Data Base Station (CMDBS) provides cellular carriers and service providers with a cost-effective solution for offering CDPD service in high traffic areas, microcell and spot coverage applications, and indoor and in- building locations. The CMDBS can also be deployed in standalone wireless data networks such as in office buildings, warehouses and campus environments.

Production units will be available in the fourth quarter of this year.

The CMDBS is a much smaller version of PCSI’s industry-leading standard Cellerity MDBS. Its small size (5.25-inch high, 17-inch wide, 14-inch deep) allows it to be easily installed in physically constrained locations while still providing superior radio performance and FasTrak sniffing and hopping.

In addition, the CMDBS uses the same CDPD V1.0 and V1.1 compliant software which provides a seamless, transparent interface to the MD-IS and network management system. This allows current Cellerity customers to take advantage of existing tools, procedures, operations and hardware.

The basic CMDBS has one CDPD radio channel and can be expanded to provide additional radio channels via an expansion unit. It can be configured to include a variety of RF front ends accommodating all leading AMPS infrastructure equipment, including a version where the radio has a maximum RF output power of 3 watts that can be adjusted via software to as low as 100 milliwatts.

The CMDBS also interfaces to a high gain amplifier unit (up to 45 watts) and network interface CSU/DSU, providing a highly integrated, versatile “plug and play” solution.

“We are extremely excited about the benefits the Compact MDBS offers our customers,” said Dave Brandos, vice president and general manager of PCSI’s Infrastructure Products Group. “With CDPD deployment and usage increasing, there is an increasing need for providing minicell and microcell coverage.

The CMDBS meets this need, providing a highly integrated, network transparent product that carriers can deploy easily, quickly and cost-effectively.”

CDPD is a packet data technology that is designed to overlay the existing AMPS cellular infrastructure already in place throughout the United States and in over 70 other countries worldwide. CDPD works by transmitting data packets over existing cellular frequencies, making it a flexible and economical way to send and receive wireless data.

CDPD is currently available in more than 85 markets nationwide and several markets internationally and continues to be deployed at an aggressive rate.
