Design for Intelligent, Interactive Baby Mobile of the Future Wins Design Competition Sponsored by Alias/Wavefront and IBM

A design for an interactive mobile with embedded intelligence that adapts its appearance, sound and motion to the behavior of a baby won the “create-what’s-next”(TM) Design Competition sponsored by Alias/Wavefront(TM) and IBM(R).
The worldwide competition today recognized Chicago-based industrial designer Aaron DeJule’s entry for creating a vision of a product enabled by technologies approximately five to 10 years in the future. DeJule’s baby mobile uses organic electronic displays to monitor a child’s movements and respond with corresponding mobile activity. The mobile would display images on screen-like wings, changing from black and white still images to full-motion color video as the infant develops.
“An interactive mobile that keeps pace with a developing infant would create stimulation, relaxation and entertainment during a critical period of human growth,” says DeJule. “New technologies would make a classic children’s toy more interactive and responsive to a baby’s behavior.”
Alias/Wavefront and IBM’s IntelliStation(R) workstation team organized the competition to support the imagination and vision of the worldwide industrial design community. Entries were created using Alias/Wavefront’s StudioTools(TM) suite of Computer-Aided Industrial Design (CAID) software. StudioTools runs on the IBM IntelliStation workstation.
The competition was endorsed by the International Council of Societies of Design and hosted by the Design Exchange in Toronto. Judging included five internationally recognized design and technology leaders.

DeJule’s winning entry earned him a prize worth $20,000 USD, including $10,000 in cash, an IBM IntelliStation professional workstation with Alias/Wavefront StudioTools for Microsoft(R) Windows(R)-based computers, and an expense-paid trip to Toronto to participate in today’s awards ceremony at the Design Exchange.
The competition recognized three other winners. Dong Min Lee, an industrial design graduate student at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., won the second prize valued at $13,500 USD for “Lullu,” a purse-shaped computer that would contain computational jewelry and programmable beads. Casey Wright, a product visualization specialist at Lunar Design in Palo Alto, Calif., along with team members Tad Toulis, Pierre-Yves DuBois, Flo Bautista, and Andrew Zee, won the third prize valued at $10,500 USD for “BLU,” an exploration of new combinations of clothing, flexible displays, and wireless networking technologies. Tim Sharpe, an industrial designer in San Francisco, Calif., won a$1,000 USD honorable mention for “My.D,” a personalized, universal security key for Internet transactions and electronic data transfers.
