Covansys To Assess Current Privacy and Security Policy

and Suggest Approach for Remediation

Covansys Corporation (Nasdaq: CVNS), a global consulting and technology services company, announced today that it has been awarded a HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) assessment project by the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Inc. (CTCA), a privately-held network of cancer treatment hospitals and oncology practices that has been on the leading edge of cancer treatment for more than 20 years.

Under the terms of the agreement, Covansys will assess the current state of CTCA’s privacy and security policy and suggest a remediation approach. The work began in October and will conclude in November.

“CTCA hopes to benefit from Covansys’ extensive HIPAA expertise as we continue the ongoing process of achieving compliance with the federal mandates and with implementing the best practices possible,” said Steven Kroll, CTCA’s senior vice president and general counsel. “We are confident that Covansys’ consulting will assist us in ensuring patient privacy while continuing to provide the highest quality of care consistent with CTCA’s patient-centered approach.”

CTCA must conduct a confidential privacy and security readiness assessment in order to comply with the HIPAA privacy regulations, which become effective April 14, 2003. These regulations limit the release of protected health information without patient consent. HIPAA is a three-part federal mandate that covers the standardization of transaction codes for healthcare information. It contains policies and procedures for keeping the information private, as well as security to protect the information as it moves through the Internet and network computer systems.

“Covansys is committed to helping clients such as CTCA achieve HIPAA compliance on a tight deadline. We’re pleased to work with CTCA, an organization dedicated to applying innovative techniques and therapies to cancer treatment,” said Donna Gustafson, vice president, Covansys’ Global Health Practice.

Covansys was named among the nation’s top 10 HIPAA consultants in HIPAA Survey 2Q01 Results: Spending and Consulting Use, a September 2001 Gartner Group report. The company is a premier resource for healthcare industry leaders, and has supported numerous healthcare entities in conducting HIPAA awareness training and implementation, and meeting individual technological demands. Covansys is a member of the prestigious CHIME Foundation, a select group of more than 40 providers of health information systems products and services, which supports education for the nation’s leading healthcare CIOs.
