Brother Introduces the First Flatbed Laser Multi-Function Center with Stand-Alone Fax for under $1,000

New MFC-9600 Offers Stand-Alone Faxing, Digital Copying,

Color Scanning, PC Faxing and Video Capture. . . for only $899!

Brother International Corporation, a leading manufacturer of fax and multi-function products, announces the new MFC-9600, a 6-in-1 Flatbed Laser Multi-Function Center that provides plain paper faxing, laser printing, digital copying, color flatbed scanning, PC faxing, and video capture…all for an estimated street price of $899.

This introduction is the second multi-function center Brother has introduced with a new “flatbed” design. The MFC-9100C, color ink jet MFC with stand-alone faxing, was just released last month. The MFC-9600 is built with a high quality, laser engine that produces up to 12 page per minute printing and up to 12 copies per minute, offering the marketplace a multi-function device that goes beyond the limited copying capabilities of non-flatbed units. The MFC-9600 begins shipping this month.

Flatbed products are projected to be the largest multi-function growth area over the next 3 to 4 years (IDC, August 1999), as more and more small office and home office users look to add the flexibility of copying and scanning from books and magazines in an all-in-one device. The introduction of Brother’s new MFC-9600 and MFC-9100C puts the versatility of flatbed units within the reach of small and home office businesses.

“We have long known that there would be tremendous demand for a model like the MFC-9600, but the SOHO market has always been driven by products with price points under $1,000,” says Don Cummins, Brother’s Vice President of Marketing for Fax, Multi-Function and Printers. “Up until today, the consumer has had to make a choice: a non-flatbed multi-function model with strong faxing and printing or a flatbed digital copier/printer without fax capability. Our new MFC-9600 handles both sets of needs, and is less than $1,000. In addition, we have included color input capability, flatbed color scanning and video capture.”

The MFC-9600 works and functions as a full-featured, stand-alone plain paper fax with a 14.4K bps fax modem. It has a robust, dual access, 8MB memory, capable of storing up to 700 pages for out-of-paper reception, broadcasting or memory transmission applications. The built-in 50 page auto document feeder and high capacity 250 sheet letter/legal paper cassette handle those large sending or receiving jobs, and a second optional 250 sheet cassette is also available. The flatbed design also allows you to fax from the document glass.

The MFC-9600 offers additional capabilities, including 32 one touch and 100 speed dial locations, connection to an external telephone or telephone answering machine, automatic reduction of incoming faxes, and a memory which can be upgraded to a total of 24MB. It also allows users to send and receive faxes while printing a document from your PC.

The MFC-9600 also works as a digital copier to make copies from either the document glass (up to A4 size) or its built-in 50 page document feeder (which holds paper up to legal size). It will produce up to 99 copies of an original at speeds as fast as 12 copies per minute, at 600 dpi. In addition, the MFC-9600 includes reduction and enlargement from 25% to 400%, sorting, and special copy options (2 in 1, 4 in1, and poster functions).

The MFC-9600 delivers high-quality laser printing at true 600 x 600 dpi resolution, and a print speed up to12 pages per minute. It comes standard with both USB and parallel interfaces, and a parallel printer cable is included in the box. The MFC-9600 is also the first flatbed multi-function model that is compatible with both Windows(R) (Windows(R) 3.1, 3.11, 95/98 and NT(R) Workstation 4.0) and Apple(R) iMacTM/G3/G4 platforms.

The MFC-9600 offers two different toner cartridges: the TN-430 standard toner cartridge with up to 3,000 page yield (supplied in the box and available as a replacement consumable), or the TN-460 high yield toner cartridge with up to 6,000 page yield. The MFC-9600 comes standard with a long life drum unit, the DR-400, rated at 20,000 pages. This separate drum/toner system delivers a calculated cost per copy as low as $0.021.

The Brother MFC-9600 is the first monochrome laser multi-function unit that also has the ability to double as a color input device, with flatbed color scanning and a video capture (NTSC) port. Therefore, MFC-9600 users will have the ability to import color graphic images for use in their documents and presentations, whether from hardcopy original, digital camera, VCR, or camcorder. The finished jobs can later be printed on a dedicated color printer.

The MFC-9600 scans in color or B&W, at up to 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution (interpolated) or 300 x 600 dpi optical, either from the document glass or by using the built-in 50-page auto document feeder. It comes bundled with both ScanSoft(TM) PaperPort(R) and TextBridge(R) OCR software(a), providing professional document management of scanned documents or images. The “Scanner” section of the MFC-9600 control panel features easy to use, dedicated keys which automatically launch the corresponding PC application(a), eliminating all the mouse clicks normally required to get started.

The easy to use keys are as follows:

Dedicated Scan Button(a) Function / Application

Scan Image For scanning color pictures or images

directly into your PC’s default

graphics application for viewing and

Scan/OCR For directly scanning hardcopy text

documents into the bundled ScanSoft

TextBridge OCR application(a), which

then automatically converts text

for editing within your word

processing application.

Scan to E-mail For scanning hardcopy documents

directly into your default E-mail

application as a file attachment to

your email.

“We refuse to believe that just because a consumer chooses a high performance monochrome printing device, that they have no color applications or need for color input to their PC,” states Don Cummins, Brother’s Vice President of Marketing, “…we believe that they do indeed work with color applications on a daily basis, but are simply sending their periodic color printing jobs to a secondary color ink jet printer or a networked color laser printer.”

The MFC-9600 is the perfect solution for users who need to import and modify color pictures or graphics to “beef up” their documents or presentations. For even more flexibility in creating eye-catching materials, the MFC-9600 includes a video capture port. Using a standard RCA (NTSC) jack, users can import, modify and save still frames from VCRs, camcorders and digital cameras. Captured images can be printed directly in monochrome without PC intervention, or saved to their PCs in color(a).

For iMac/G3/G4 users, Brother provides only a TWAIN driver for color and B&W scanning. (The bundled software, dedicated scan keys, and video capture to PC only work with Windows-based PCs.)

The MFC-9600 supplies users with the ability to send and receive faxes via the PC, with bundled SmithMicro(R) PC Fax Software(a). It also includes NetCentric(R) PC Internet Fax Software for low cost faxing over the Internet.++(a)
