VIENNA, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sept. 17, 2001

Belgian television broadcaster Canal+ Belgique, a division of the French pay TV group Canal+, is streamlining its sports and feature production process through the installation of Screening Room(R) from Convera (Nasdaq:CNVR).

Screening Room, an award-winning digital video content management solution, will provide Canal+’s editorial staff instant access via the company’s intranet to multilingual sports video footage.

With Screening Room, Canal+’s English, French and Dutch-language video footage can now be captured, indexed, managed and easily searched, enabling editors to quickly retrieve key highlights from which to compile their news reports and eliminate the need to manually search through hours of analog videotape to identify game highlights.

This latest Screening Room installation further strengthens Convera’s position in the broadcasting market as the leading provider of cross-lingual, multimedia search and content management solutions.

Commenting on the installation of Convera’s Screening Room, Dominique Van Layes, the Technical Director from Canal+ Belgique, said, “Canal+ has set high programming standards and we knew that if we were to maintain these standards we would need to improve our production efficiency. Our editorial teams work in three different languages, in a busy environment, and it was imperative that the system we chose be able to perform in a situation like this with minimal effort from the user.

He continued: “After looking at several products we eventually chose Convera’s Screening Room. Not only did it offer a unique and advanced search system that was both open and scaleable but it also had the capacity to handle Dutch, French and English footage simultaneously, without losing any of its functionality. It also possessed a simple but intuitive user interface that could be accessed over our Intranet enabling instant and easy adoption by the whole team.”

Peter Doyle, International Marketing Director for Convera, added, “Canal+ Belgique further extends our customer base in the broadcast arena and demonstrates the recognition our products are receiving in the industry. Unlike our competitors, Convera is able to provide high performance capture, index and search capabilities combined with cross-lingual functionality, in one package and from one provider. The unique and innovative way in which Canal+ has used our product demonstrates how pliable and how user-friendly it is.”

About Convera’s Screening Room

Convera’s Screening Room provides scalable, high-performance access to any video asset (analog or digital) from an ordinary Web browser.

With Screening Room, users can automatically capture video; browse visual summaries (called “storyboards”); catalog content using metadata, annotations, closed caption text, and voice sound tracks; search for precise video clips using text and image clues; and create rough cuts and “Edit Decision Lists” for further production; and publish those video assets to the Web for streaming.

Screening Room turns video assets into useful, profitable resources in a cost-effective way.
