Boston Acoustics Introduces The SoundBar Cinema Home Theater System

PEABODY, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dec. 15, 1997–

The first high-performance home theater sound system that

eliminates the complexity of conventional home theater systems

Boston Acoustics today introduced the SoundBar Cinema System–the first high-performance home theater sound system that eliminates the complexity of conventional home theater systems. Simple to install and simple to operate, SoundBar Cinema provides the performance of larger, more complicated home theater systems using only three unobtrusive components. This new home theater system consists of a SoundBar module, a powered sub-woofer and a diffuse-field surround speaker–three components easily connected by three simple wires.

The SoundBar Module

The SoundBar module sits on top of the TV and houses the left, center and right front channel speakers plus the system’s electronics–a state-of-the-art all digital Dolby(R) Pro Logic(R) decoder, multi-channel, actively-equalized power amplifier, and QSound(R) image enhancement technology. This innovative design replaces the three separate front speakers and the receiver/decoder found in conventional systems. Inputs are included for three signal sources such as a TV, VCR and cable box.

The use of a digital Dolby Pro Logic decoder increases channel separation compared to an analog decoder, for extremely realistic movie effects. The system also uses patented QSound 3D audio technology. Developed by QSound Labs, Inc., this microchip dramatically enhances front-stage imaging for exciting, life-like theater sound.

The SoundBar Subwoofer

The SoundBar subwoofer provides the bass foundation required for authoritative reproduction of movie soundtracks and special effects. Using a 6 1/2-inch bass driver in a dual-chamber bandpass design, the subwoofer fills the room with deep, clean bass from a compact enclosure that can easily be hidden behind furniture.

The SoundBar Surround

The SoundBar surround is a diffuse-field design for realistic home theater effects. Two drivers, located on opposite sides of the cabinet, project sound along the room’s walls thus enveloping the listening area in an ambient, three-dimensional sound-field. It easily mounts on a wall or ceiling behind or over the listening area with the included mounting hardware.

SoundBar Remote Control

SoundBar Cinema comes with a pre-programmed, universal remote control that operates the SoundBar system as well as virtually all brands of TVs, VCRs and cable boxes for convenient operation.

“Our goal was to introduce a system that was truly simple to set up and use, and didn’t take up a lot of space,” stated Boston Acoustics CEO Andy Kotsatos.

“Since we wanted top performance as well as convenient operation, we incorporate digital Dolby Pro Logic decoding and QSound 3D audio technology to deliver great sound from a space-saving package.”

“Boston Acoustics’ reputation for designing and manufacturing exceptional sound systems is well known,” added QSound Labs’ President David Gallagher. “QSound Labs’ leadership role in 3D audio can only be enhanced by becoming part of this innovative new product.”

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the SoundBar Cinema system is $799.95. Founded in 1979 by Frank Reed and Andy Kotsatos, Boston Acoustics (NASDAQ:BOSA) is a leading manufacturer of fine audio systems for use in home, car and computing environments.
