WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 7, 2003

Donna Maria Coles Johnson, an African-American attorney, author, motivational speaker and small business expert, has been named “Home-Based Business Advocate of the Year” by the Small Business Administration’s Washington Metropolitan District Office.

The award will be presented to Johnson on Thursday during the Metropolitan Area Salute to Small Business 2003 Awards Breakfast, which will be themed “America’s Small Business Resource: Enduring the Vitality and Growth of Entrepreneurs.”

“Small business is truly the backbone of the American economy,” said Joseph P. Loddo, District Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration in announcing the award. “I salute you and those who have assisted you in growing your business. Your hard work, management skills and commitment to the community are an embodiment of the entrepreneurial spirit and have contributed to your success.”

Johnson, a resident of Bowie, Maryland, is the founder of the Handmade Beauty Network, the largest trade organization for manufacturers of handmade cosmetics, toiletries, soaps and other beauty products.

She originally pursued cosmetics manufacture as a hobby, and loved it so much that she left corporate law to start HBN and pursue her own entrepreneurial dream of inspiring and encouraging others to maximize their success through small business ownership.

She now runs the Handmade Beauty Network, practices law from her home office, and publishes a weekly newsletter featuring her popular column “Create the Life You Love,” addressing business-related topics such as Creating An Entrepreneurial Mindset and Build Your Own Corporate Ladder. She is an outspoken advocate for business ownership, especially for women.

“This is an extraordinary honor,” said Johnson upon learning of the award. “I have followed my heart and my passion is encouraging others with business ownership dreams to do the same. I love what I do, and to be recognized by the nation’s top small business agency for doing what I love is just incredible.”

In addition to the Handmade Beauty Network, Johnson has launched MangoButter.com, a matching service for suppliers, manufacturers and hobbyists, and MakeYourCosmetics.com, with hundreds of recipes and services. She is also the author of Making Aromatherapy Creams and Lotions, and was also profiled in Peter Montoya’s new book, The Brand Called You.
