There are many books on the market to help you start an online bulletin board system. Running a Perfect BBS (Que Books, $39.99) is a solid reference for beginners or veterans setting up a BBS. It comes with Wildcat Lite BBS software and WC DRAW.
Bulletin Board Systems For Business, (John Wiley & Sons, $34.95) is great for those who want to know the basics of running a BBS for profit. Although published in 1992, the book is still useful today.
Alan D. Bryant’s Creating Successful Bulletin Board Systems (Addison Wesley, $39.95) comes highly recommended by the Association of Online Professionals (AOP). The book shows how to get a BBS running from start to finish, and also includes a full version of TBBS software. It explains the capabilities and liabilities of a BBS and offers advice on estimating financial statements. The AOP also publishes Business Planning For Online Services ($54.95, 703-924-9692) by David Kennedy, which details how to write a sound business plan for an online service.
The BBS Construction Kit, by David Wolfe (Wiley, $29.95) tells you everything you need to know to bring a ” BBS to life. It comes with monster GAP BBS software, quick door converter, Global Wars (a BBS game) and a complete e-mail package. Another book by Wolfe, Expanding Your BBS, (Wiley, $34.95) is for BBS owners or veteran systems operators who want to enhance their current system. This book covers hardware”‘such as high-speed modems, and information on adding advanced features to upgrade a BBS.
