China city names Japan actress Ryoko Nakano tourism envoy
BEIJING, April 26 Kyodo
The northeastern Chinese city Anshan has named Japanese actress Ryoko Nakano as tourism image envoy for the city, China’s state-run news agency Xinhua said Thursday.
Chinese tourism officials hope that Nakano, who is hugely popular in China and other Asian countries, would help boost the image of Anshan as a tourist destination among overseas travelers, the agency said.
The Xinhua report indicates that Chinese authorities intend to promote cultural exchange and tourism with Japan even though Beijing has canceled a series of high-level visits to Japan in protest against the visit of former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui to Japan.
Nakano, who has appeared in numerous movies and TV dramas, has become known among Chinese fans since two of her movies, ”Cross the angry river” and ”Mrs. Gin,” were shown in China back in the late 1970s.
