The Finnish flight attendants’ union SLSY issued on Tuesday (17 October) a strike warning in response to Finnair’s plans to hire 500 new flight attendants for its growing Asian business through its Estonian subsidiary Aero.
The strike is scheduled to begin at 04:00 Finnish time on Thursday (19 October), and could stop all Finnair flights.
Finnair has called the strike illegal, and said in a statement on Tuesday that a strike could cost the company EUR2.5m per day.
Finnair reportedly wants to recruit the new cabin staff through Aero as this would enable the company to pay them according to the current national collective agreement, which is 30% less than the payment level for Finnair’s existing flight attendant staff.
