A consortium of four dredging companies has been awarded a contract to reclaim from the Gulf nearly half of the site for the New Doha International Airport in Qatar.
The contract awarded to Qatar Dredging Company, Belgium’s Dredging International, US-based Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co and the Dutch company Boskalis Westminster is worth QAR1.5bn (USD420m). It involves placing over 60 million cubic metres of sand and rock fill over a two-year period to reclaim from the Gulf a platform of 22 square kilometres.
The first phase of the new airport is expected to be completed in 2009 and will be able to accommodate 12 million passengers a year, reports The Associated Press.
