Mercury-free HID lighting
Osram Sylvania (www.sylvania.com) is the first supplier to provide a completely mercury-free high intensity discharge lamp and ballast system. It debuts on the ’07 Lincoln Navigator SUV. The new technology, dubbed D3 HID, plays a major role in Osram Sylvania’s attempt to develop more environmentally-friendly lighting solutions for DEMs while meeting the tougher state vehicle recycling regulations that specifically call for the elimination of mercury in vehicle components. The Partnership for Mercury Free Vehicles says there is an estimated 200 tons of mercury in vehicles on the road today. The highly toxic substance has the potential to cause major environmental issues when vehicles reach the end of their lifecycle.
