Speaking of major award shows: if you didn’t catch it, you’ll be happy to hear that a very traditional form of folk singing was featured at the Academy Awards. Tim Eriksen and the Sacred Harp Singers of Liberty Church were featured on stage during the performance of two songs from the film Cold Mountain. Alison Krauss sang Elvis Costello’s “The Scarlet Tide.” which was nominated for an Oscar, with the Sacred Harp singers giving a shape note style arrangement of the last chorus. Then, Tim led the Singers along with Alison, Sting, Elvis Costello, and Annie Lennox in “Liberty,” straight from the pages of the Sacred Harp. So, if you see Tom Cruise or J-Lo at your next Sacred Harp sing, you may know why! Cold Mountain soundtrack producer T-Bone Burnett and Gabriel Yared were also awarded with a British Academy Film Award for Best Film Music Achievement.
