STRAIGHT TO VIDEO

Matthew Bright’s Freeway II: Confessions of a Trickbaby (99) earns sequel status by returning to the same fairy-tale revisionism that made Reese Witherspoon’s never-had-a-chance heroine a Red Riding Hood to cheer for in 1996’s Freeway. This time, “Hansel and Gretel” is up for grabs and Natasha Lyonne stars as bulimic White Girl, thrown into juvie for robbing her tricks. Faced with an eternity of institutionalization, she and cohort Cyclona (Maria Celedonio) head for Mexico. All the ingredients are here for satisfying, late-night viewing: blood, guts, crack and vomit, plus Vincent Gallo at the head of a candy-covered household that chums out kiddie porn. But the film’s success depends on its two leads, and while Lyonne is satisfyingly corrosive, Celedonio ruins it for everyone. All the same, when Lyonne is reunited with her lawyer and sometime lover David Allan Grier, you can’t help but root for her too. (Full Moon rental/$24.95 DVD)
