At the recent sale of photographs from the Seagram collection at Phillips de Pury & Luxembourg, 350 of the lots offered sold, bringing in a total of $2.4 million. Top lot was William Eggleston’s “14 Pictures,” which sold for $160,000 (est. $100,000 to $150,000), followed by Walker Evans’ “Main Street, Saratoga Springs, New York,” which sold for $85,000 (ext. $40,000 to $60,000). A few suprises were also in the mix; Karl Strauss’ “The City of Dreams” fetched more than seven times its high estimate at $62,140 (est. $6,000 to $8,000) while Robert Frank’s “Covered Car–Long Beach, Calif.,” garnered $54,970 (est. $5,000 to $7,000).
