Criteria for selection included treating artists with courtesy and respect, paying on time, promoting and marketing American crafts, contributing time and energy to the craft community, as well as mentoring emerging artists. More than 670 galleries, retail stores and museum shops were nominated.

Tope Gallery of New Hope, Pa., was named 2003 Craft Retailer of the Year. Other retailers in the top 10 are Grovewood Gallery of Ashville, N.C.; Gifted Hand of Wellesly, Mass.; Studio 41 of Benecia, Calif.; Show of Hands in Denver; An American Craftsman of Slate Hill, N.Y.; Mountain Laurel Crafts of Berkley Springs, W.Va.; Clarksville Pottery Galleries of Austin, Texas; Craft Company No. 6 of Rochester, N.Y.; and Don Muller Gallery of Northampton, Mass.
